Summary
Borehamwood
is a lively, commercial town located within Hertfordshire, surrounded
by attractive Green Belt countryside, yet just outside of Greater
London (only 22 minutes from London's St Pancras International station).
Borehamwood is home to the Elstree
film studios which is how it got named the 'British Hollywood'.
Films such as Moby Dick, Superman, Star Wars and other epics were
made in the town. These days, Elstree fim studios are home to the
Big Brother House and Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire. Also, the
main Studio Complex for BBC
is situated only across the road - this is where Eastenders
and Holby
City are all made. The population is approximately 30,000 and
the town is in the Borough of Hertsmere (whose offices are situated
in Elstree Way).
Transport
The
M1, A1 and M25 are all within easy reach, providing direct access
to London and the rest of the UK. A First
Capital Connect train service runs to London St Pancras International,
St Albans and Luton at regular intervals. A comprehensive bus network
provides links to neighbouring areas.
Shopping
The
main shopping area is centralised down the main high street, Shenley
Road, and features a selection of leading stores such as Superdrug,
main high street banks (National
Westminster, Barclays,
HSBC) together
with a main supermarket (Tesco)
plus more traditional retailers. A retail warehouse park, Boulevard
25, is located on the edge of town, which includes large stores
such as Next,
Marks
and Spencers Food Store, Argos,
JD Sports,
WHSmith,
Boots and Carphone
Warehouse. There is a range of food retailers ranging from fast
food outlets such as McDonalds
and Burger
King, to restaurants including Nandos,
Zinco and Divan). There are smaller shopping areas found in Leeming
Road and Manor Way.
Leisure
The
Venue in Shenley Road is home to Beaumonts fitness centre, health
suite, dance studio and 25-metre, eight-lane swimming pool, jacuzzi,
spa and numerous aerobic programmes. Such facilities are also found
at Virgin
Leisuire situated further down Shenley Road in the main high
street area. Nearby, the sister Venue is the Hawksmoor Centre in
Cowley Hill which includes a fitness suite, squash, badminton and
a bar. The A1 Golf Range is also available to keen golfers, plus
there is a cinema
and bingo centre.
