Summary
Elstree
is a much older settlement than Borehamwood - with history dating
back to Roman times. Attractive old houses, cottages and inns
of timber frame and brick construction can be found in this quaint
little village. Elstree is in the Borough of Hertsmere (whose
offices are situated in Elstree Way, Borehamwood).
Transport
The
M1, A1 and M25 are all within easy reach, providing direct access
to London and the rest of the UK. A comprehensive bus network
provides links to neighbouring areas. Elstree also has its own
aerodrome - a busy, general aviation airfield. Around 120 aircraft
are based at the 70-acre site, which has a 656 metre runway. Many
companies are based at the Aerodrome including Cabair
Group of Aviation companies who operate over 100 aeroplanes
and helicopters (visit this company to treat yourself to a helicopter
sightseeing ride over London!). Capital
Radio's Flying Eye used this aerodrome.
Shopping
There
are only a handful of shops in this small town including a convenience
store. However this town is often considered part of Borehamwood
where there is a large shopping area.
Leisure
Aldenham
Country Park is found in Elstree. The park boasts 175 acres of
ground including woodland and open water. The park also features
a rare breeds centre, and for children, an adventure playground
and Winnie-the-Pooh '100-Acre Wood'. Aldenham Reservoir is central
to the park. It was built to assist and regulate water levels
in the River Colne, the water is also used for sailing, windsurfing
and fishing.
